It Turns Out The Tesla Cybertruck Will Eventually Hit 500 Miles Of Range. That's The Target, At Least

Many were disappointed when it was revealed that the Tesla Cybertruck AWD would only have 340 miles of range. The Cyberbeast, which was expected to have 500 miles of range, is currently being offered with a paltry 320 miles of range. Fortunately, Tesla also listed a "range extender" for the Cybertruck, which should provide the vehicle with more range.
With a range extender, the Cybertruck AWD could travel an estimated range of 470+ miles. That doesn't meet the original 500-mile estimate from Tesla back in 2019, but it’s close. But according to Tesla SVP of Powertrain and Energy Andrew Baglino during a conversation with teardown master Sandy Munro of YouTube’s Munro Live, Tesla is still shooting for that 500 mile target.
Baglino revealed that Tesla’s long-term target for a range-extended Cybertruck is actually over 500 miles. So fear not. The 500-mile Cybertruck is coming. It will just involve the pickup truck and a range extender.
NEWS: @baglino says Tesla's long term range target for the Cybertruck's extended range battery pack is over 500 miles (from the 470+ currently listed).

They decided to make it an optional add on because the avg person drives less than 40 miles per day. @larsmoravy said the 340… pic.twitter.com/LPoe3ONU1S
Details about the Cybertruck’s range extender are about as clear as Elon Musk's tweets on a good day. We're still in the dark about how (or even if) the extra battery pack can be removed from the truck bed, and its weight remains a closely guarded secret. Even its capacity is a mystery, though InsideEVs’ calculations point to about 47 kWh for an extra 130 miles to the Cybertruck AWD's 340-mile range.
Tesla hasn't finalized the price tag for the Cybertruck’s range extender, though its website currently teases a possible price of around $16,000. Consider that a placeholder, though – the number could change before the pack hits production lines in the near future.
To be fair, Tesla never explicitly said the 500-mile range would come from a single battery pack when it unveiled the Cybertruck back in 2019, though it was widely understood. By not mentioning a range extender back then, they certainly set expectations high. So why the switcheroo now, instead of simply offering a larger main battery?
Sandy Munro stated that the average person in the United States drives less than 40 miles per day. This, Baglino said, was a big part of Tesla’s decision to offer a range extender instead. “We want to make more electric vehicles, right? So rather than putting more cells in that no one is ever going to use, if you want it you can buy it,” Moravy said.
