Tesla's official website shows that the Model 3 Rear Wheel Drive (RWD) can become a sub-$30,000 vehicle in select states. In Colorado, the all-electric sedan can be acquired for $27,740 before taxes and fees.

Why it matters: The Model 3 is currently Tesla's most affordable vehicle. Before the Model 3 was released, expectations were high that it would be Tesla's $35,000 car. At this price, the Model 3 was expected to break into the mainstream car market.

The Model 3 would start its deliveries in July 2017, though Tesla would initially offer the vehicle only in its Long Range RWD variant, which was far more expensive than $35,000. Tesla would release a $35,000 Model 3 in the form of the Standard Range variant in February 2019, but customers could only acquire the vehicle at the price if they follow specific steps.

Today, the Model 3 RWD, the vehicle's base variant, costs $40,240 before incentives. That's still above the $35,000 target that was expected for the Model 3 all those years back. The Model 3 RWD, at its current price, offers great value, but there are some things that are going against it. It's not the Model 3 Highland edition that's been released in Europe and China, and the Model Y RWD's price is not that far.

What's happening: Thanks to incentives from the United States Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), the Model 3 RWD can be acquired for a significantly lower cost. In the state of Colorado, the price of the vehicle is very attractive.

The IRA offers a federal tax credit of $7,500 for qualified electric vehicle buyers. Colorado also offers its residents state tax credits of up to $5,000. Together, these incentives could push the Model 3 RWD's price down to just $27,740 before taxes and fees in Colorado. Take note that we do not count the 3-year estimated gas savings in Tesla's computation.

What we have: The Tesla Model 3 Highland is not yet available in the United States. This is unfortunate as the new Model 3 features several Model S/X-inspired improvements, such as a rear display. If Model 3 owners in the US wish to have a rear display for their Model 3 sedans, they would have to purchase third-party solutions such as Hansshow's Tesla Model 3/Y H72 Rear CarPlay Screen

Hansshow also offers a Model S/X-inspired 7.2-inch Tesla Model 3/Y Rear Entertainment and Climate Control Display, as well as a more affordable 7-inch Model 3/Y Rear Entertainment and Climate Control Touch Screen Display H7. These high-definition IPS rear screens are compatible with Tesla Model 3 and Model Y vehicles that are equipped with Intel and AMD chips.
