Tesla Cybertruck Range Estimate Hinted In YouTube Tech Reviewer MKBHD's Post

A pre-delivery unit of the Tesla Cybertruck spotted in the hands of YouTube tech reviewer Marques Brownlee has sparked discussion among Tesla enthusiasts regarding the all-electric pickup truck’s range.
Brownlee, better known online as as MKBHD, recently posted an image on social media showing part of the Cybertruck interior. The post also included a partial look at the Cybertruck’s infotainment system, which happened to include the remaining range of the vehicle. As could be seen in MKBHD’s post, the Cybertruck had 265 miles remaining at the time the the photo was taken.

A closer look at MKBHD’s teaser image
A close look at the image posted by the YouTube tech reviewer showed that the Cybertruck’s range indicator featured several slashes that are lighted or grayed out. From the image, it appeared that one slash was grayed out and nine were still lighted. This was interpreted by members of the Tesla community as the Cybertruck having about 85% to 90% of its battery remaining.
If the Cybertruck really did have 90% of its range remaining at the time when the photo was taken, the 265 miles displayed in the vehicle could translate to a range of approximately 294 miles on the lower end and around 315 miles on the higher end. It's important to note that factors like wheel size can influence the actual range rating, so a range of about 291.5 miles could be for the vehicle’s off-road wheel and the estimated 315 miles could be for the Cybertruck’s street tires.

Equates to a full charge of 295 miles 👀
*Note: this is likely a dual-motor with premium wheel package. Premium wheel package likely limits range by ~30-35 miles. Dual motor with standard wheels would then achieve ~335… https://t.co/UAWOBJmfP7 pic.twitter.com/Sgb6pVz13w
No EPA range yet
The EPA has yet to release official range estimates for the Cybertruck, leading to mixed reactions within the Tesla community. Some expressed disappointment with the potential range teased in the YouTube tech reviewer’s image, while others advised caution until more concrete information is available.
It's worth considering that Tesla could be intentionally limiting the range through software in these early test mules. The company has a history of software-limiting range in its vehicles, as seen in August 2023 when the company admitted that the Standard Range variants of the Model S and Model X actually had batteries that were software locked.
Key Reminders
Additionally, it should be noted that the Cybertruck will be offered in multiple configurations, and the spotted unit with MKBHD might not represent the vehicle’s longest-range variant. Tesla could be reserving that for models that will be released later on. Fortunately, Brownlee has promised to provide more insights into the Cybertruck's range and battery percentage after some driving in an upcoming video.
For a pickup truck that's intended for towing and hauling, a higher range rating is desirable to compensate for the energy expended during these activities. Battery electric pickup trucks, after all, will lose a significant part of their range when towing. Ultimately, it's best to approach the Cybertruck’s current range estimation in MKBHD’s teaser with caution until more data emerges.
